It has been demonstrated by several authors that assimilation of ground-level observations into a chemistry transport model improves the quality of analysed fields of key pollutants, especially ozone and NOx.  The improvement of short term forecast is, however, much less evident.

 

The main objective of this project is to examine the potential of assimilation of  satellite data (especially of tropospheric ozone and NO2 column) for improving prediction of ozone or aerosol episodes. The base for the experiments is at present the model pair MM5 CAMx, which is run operationally in the Institute of Computer Science, Prague, as a part of  the project MEDARD.  A data assimilating system for ground-level observations has been designed and implemented, it uses a localized ensemble square-root Kalman filter. 

 

There are two main goals of the project.

  1. Development of algorithms for the update of vertical profiles of chemical constituents in the troposphere. One such method has been proposed, based on diffusion equations and ground-level observations. Other methods arise from specific choices of the state vector in the assimilation scheme. Different ways of ensemble filtering, incorporating assimilation of satellite observations simultaneously with ground-level observations, will be examined.
  2. Investigation of  representativeness of the ground-level stations and accounting for it within the forecasting system. Using satellite data for inference about model bias and locally specific portion of ground-level station data.
